In August 1892, in Vaduz, the capitol of Liechtenstein, the Princess Pauline Metternich is facing the Countess Kielmannsegg. They are both holding swords and will fight in a fair Duel.
The reason for their confrontation is never mentioned. And we do not know who won the dispute. But their encounter has gone down in history as the first “emancipated duel” because all parties involved were female and fought topless.
In “DUEL” two female performers stage a series of confrontations. They challenge each other and the audience playing with stereotyped images of fighting woman. They dare and are daring searching for nuances that make a dispute become a duel, become a game, become a dance…

DUEL
“Un jour, je suis tombée sur une image : deux femmes à demi-nues, s’affrontant au sabre. C’était un fragment d’une peinture du XIXe siècle. Mise à part leur nudité, le fait qu’il s’agissait de deux femmes me frappa. J’avais toujours cru que le duel était une spécificité masculine. Il me fut impossible de décider si ce que je voyais était une image subversive ou un exemple primitif de pornographie. En créant Duel, j’avais pour souhait de contester et d’affronter les images stéréotypées du combat féminin. Je voulais travailler sur la stratégie patriarcale d’objectivation et en même temps mettre en scène la sexualité féminine et l’érotisme vu par les femmes. Je souhaitais m’attaquer à ces questions comme elles semblent toujours couvertes de tabous, de mythes et de malentendus.”

POJEDYNEK
Jest 1892 rok, sierpień, Vaduz, stolica Liechtenstein. Księżniczka Pauline Metternich staje twarzą w twarz z Baronową Kielmannsegg. Kobiety dzierżą w dłoniach szable i szykują się do rozegrania pojedynku.
Przyczyna sporu do dziś nie jest znana. Nie wiemy też kto wygrał walkę.
Mimo to, wydarzenie to przeszło do historii jako pierwszy wyemancypowany pojedynek, gdyż wzięły w nim udział wyłącznie kobiety, a walka została rozegrana półnago.
W spektaklu Agaty Maszkiewicz Pojedynek dwie performerki staną naprzeciw siebie, aby zainscenizować szereg konfrontacji. Rzucą wyzwanie sobie, ale też i publiczności grając stereotypowymi wizerunkami walczącej kobiety. Będą prowokować i będą śmiałe szukając niuansów, przez które różnica zdań staje się pojedynkiem, staje grą, staje się tańcem…
